John Mavar has been commercial fishing for about 25 years, and has spent the last three years onboard the Farwest Leader. John started out salmon fishing, later worked as a factory foreman for Trident Seafoods at their shoreplant in St Paul, Ak before he started crab fishing with his brother. His brother Nick currently works as a deckhand onboard the F/V Northwestern for Sig Hansen. John also owns and operates the F/V Windsong, a 32 foot Gillnetter that fishes salmon in Bristol Bay in the summers. John is from Anacortes, Washington, and enjoys doing construction work, playing golf and poker on his time off from Alaska.
