With high school behind him, Greg joined the Navy, specializing in engineering.  After discharge, he began working on factory trawlers processing pollock and Pacific cod. The year was 1986, and Ragnhild, a native of Sykkyylven, Norway, left the fiords and moved to Seattle.  Coincidently, (or was it fate?) her first fishing job was working as a processor on the same ship as Greg, the F/V Northern Glacier. Her hard work paid off with the accomplishment of a lifelong goal.  She bought a Corvette, a white L82 with a T-top that a thief couldn’t resist: three times!

Three years after they met, Greg and Ragnhild were married in 1989; their first daughter, Christina, was born in 1990. Their second daughter, Victoria, was born in 1993.  As a mother of very young children, Ragnhild became a successful travel agent, specializing in international travel and travel related to the fishing industry.  It is a dual career she has pursued intermittently ever since.

Ragnhild Moncrief - Cook/Deckhand

Meantime, Greg decided to move to the smaller boats, mainly catcher boats for cod and pollock and crab.  Working as engineer/deckhand, he finally was given the opportunity to spend more and more time in the wheelhouse.  His first full-time assignment as a captain was on the F/V Maverick. After a stint on the F/V Shaman, 7 years ago, he began serving as captain on the Farwest Leader.

But the Alaskan waters beckoned Ragnhild, and she has joined Greg onboard the Farwest Leader for two King crab seasons and one opilio season.  While she is away, two wonderful grandmothers keep the home fires burning and watch over two lively teenage girls while Mom and Dad are braving the rigors of the Bering Sea. Because the crew readies the boat and handles the necessary preparations, Ragnhild is able to only be gone from home for the 2 to 3 weeks the board actually spends at sea.  During the preparation while docked, Chilly dons an apron and makes sure the crew doesn’t go hungry.
.
On dry land, whenever given the chance, Ragnhild hits the ski slopes and travels, while Greg works and golfs at the Harbour Point golf course in Mukilteo, Washington. Both daughters are following in their parents’ footsteps. Christina spent the last two summers tendering in Bristol Bay, including handling fish ticket and associated paperwork. Victoria spend one summer as a deck helper
